3.0 INGREDIENT FUNCTIONS:
1. CYNOMORIUM SONGARICUM
Parasitic Plant Widely Used in Traditional Medicine
BACKGROUND
Cynomorium is known in Chinese as suoyang, which is based on the herb's medicinal effects, "locking the yang." It is obtained mainly from the East Asian species, Cynomorium songaricum, though the similar C. coccineum is sometimes utilized as a substitute (and is used in other countries, from Europe to Central Asia , where it is the native species). The plant harvested for Chinese medicine grows at high altitude, mainly in Inner Mongolia , Qinghai , Gansu , and Tibet .
It used to tonify the yang (treat impotence and backache), strengthen the tendons, and nourish the blood to alleviate the blood-deficiency type of constipation.
As an explanation of its uses by the doctrine of signatures, since the plant appears reddish-brown, and becomes darker upon drying, herbalists thought it would be useful to treat ailments of the blood. On top of that, the phallic shape indicated the plant could also be used to treat sexual problems. The dried spikes were used by the Crusader Knights after their battles to recover strength. In Saudi Arabia , the plant is called tarthuth, and is recognized to have the same properties mentioned above, as well as many others, including treatment of digestive disorders and ulcer.
The plant has no chlorophyll; the fleshy red stems or spikes have tiny scarlet flowers. Its active constituents have not been fully analyzed, but cynomorium is known to contain anthocyanic glycosides, triterpene saponins, and lignans. Pharmacology experiments are in the early stage, with attempts to demonstrate a hormonal effect that would explain its use in impotence, as well as findings that the herb extracts inhibits HIV, lower blood pressure, and improve blood flow in laboratory experiments.
Cynomorium, which has a pleasant, sweet taste when raw, has long been known as a "famine food," that is, something not frequently eaten, but nourishing enough to help people survive when the standard foods are insufficient. Cynomorium is considered to be a superb tonic to the primal yang essence and is thus used in many tonics for both men and women. It is widely believed in the Orient to be a superb longevity herb and an excellent sexual tonic and stimulant. It is said to strengthen the bones. Because of these uses, the formula has been suggested by Chinese clinicians as a possible therapy for paralytic disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and ALS.
2. Cordycepts
Cordyceps benefits:
Improving the cellular energy production;
Enhancing the utilization of oxygen in the body;
Increasing blood circulation, making oxygen and nutrients more rapidly available to all parts of the body.
OTHER BENEFITS OF CORDYCEPS
OTHER BENEFITS OF CORDYCEPS
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Cordyceps has long been used as an aphrodisiac. Recent research in China and Japan has shown a 64% success rate among men suffering from sexual dysfunction, vs. 24% in the placebo group;
Cordyceps stimulates the immune system. Research (Georges Halpern, MD, Ph.D. in: Cordyceps, China's Healing Mushroom. 1999. Avery Publishing Group, New York") shows that the greater the amount of Cordyceps taken, the more one can fight off bacterial and viral diseases;
Cordyceps enhances the natural anti-oxidant systems in the body.

3. SIBERIAN GINSENG (ELEUTHEROCOCCUS SENTICOSUS)
Over a period of several decades, German and Soviet researchers have studied the effects of eleuthero, on the performance of athletes. Medicinal preparations are made from the roots of the plants.
It have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years as a tonic indicated for its beneficial effects on the central nervous system, protection from stress ulcers, increase of gastrointestinal motility, anti-fatigue action, enhancement of sexual function and acceleration of metabolism.
Eleuthero, falls within a category of substances termed “adaptogens” by TCM practitioners. An adaptogen is defined as a therapeutic and restorative tonic that produces a “balancing” effect on the body. The properties required of a substance to fulfill this definition are that “the substance should be innocuous and cause minimal disorders in the physiological functions of an organism, that the action be non-specific in that it increases resistance to a wide range of factors (including physical, chemical and biological factors), and that the substance should possess a normalizing action irrespective of the direction of the pathological changes.” In general, adaptogens are substances that help the body to deal with stress.
Siberian “ginseng” (actually not a “true” ginseng because it is a member of a different plant family) did not really come into the picture as a botanical remedy until the 20th century. Found in the northern regions of the former Soviet Union , the roots of Eleutherococcus senticosus were sought out as a cheaper substitute for the expensive Oriental ginsengs. Soviet researchers found Siberian ginseng to be an excellent tonic to enhance athletic performance as well as to strengthen the body during times of stress. Modern herbalists consider Siberian ginseng to be a “stimulating” and “balancing” adaptogen.
The active components in Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) are considered to be eleutherosides. It has been theorized that eleuthero's action in the body is due to its stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to secrete adrenal corticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH has the ability to bind directly to brain cells and can affect a variety of behaviors in the body. These behaviors might include motivation, vitality, performance and arousal.
One study found that highly trained male athletes taken Siberian Ginseng showed an increase in their maximum oxygen uptake (compared to the placebo group) as well as a statistically significant improvement in recovery time and lower serum lactate values. Other studies in various groups of young athletes have shown similar extracts to provide statistically significant improvements in performance measures such as forced vital capacity (lung capacity) and maximum breathing capacity as compared to the placebo groups.
Like other adaptogenic herbs, eleuthero is used to combat the effect of physical and mental stress and to boost physical and mental energy levels. Typical claims found for eleuthero supplements include:
1. Increases energy levels - improves the oxygen intake up to 8.2% on 20 athletes after taking Siberian Ginseng for 4 weeks (according to School of Food and Nutrition of Bu Ren University in Taiwan )
2. Enhances athletic performance
3. Tonic for well-being
4. Immune enhancer
5. Balances blood sugar
6. Improves cognitive function
7. Relieves stress - enhanced the quality of work under stressful conditions.
8. Dilates coronary arteries
9. Increase the ability to handle adverse physical conditions, improve mental performance
10. Its anti-fatigue effect is stronger than that of ginseng.
